A Message from the Artist

“The logo uses the imagery of 4 people singing together, 4 being a sacred number for many Coast Salish peoples. They are surrounded by cattails. I thought a lot about our different medicines and natural materials, and lately the cattails have been coming up a lot in my life. Here on the Musqueam reserve we have a massive marsh of cattails and it’s actually really beautiful, and represents our land so well! I was also told recently that my great great grandmother was a cattail weaver! So I tried to represent the cattail in our style a lot more, and I think it worked out this time.

These days we have so many materials that can be used for weaving, but the cat tails might also be one of the first materials for weaving. It brings old practices to life again, and I feel like it resonates a lot with how no matter what instruments may come to be, a voice can also be an instrument. Singing may not come to everybody - just like how weaving may not come to everybody. For many people who sing, the act of singing can have a similar effect as being brushed off, it brings a sense of relief and wholeness. The rainbow flag is the modern colours used to represent LGBTQIAS2+ people. This one also happens to be shaped as a spindle whorl, and can be spun and viewed at any angle.”

About the Artist

Chase Gray is a 2-spirit Musqueam and Tsimshian artist living in their traditional xʷməθkʷəy̓əm territory, also known as Vancouver, BC. Growing up, he was always surrounded by culture and art, particularly Tsimshian dance and Formline design. Through time, learning, and understanding, Chase has developed a separate Coast Salish design style, which he now uses to represent xʷməθkʷəy̓əm art within xʷməθkʷəy̓əm territory. Much of Chase’s art features bright colours, nostalgia, and queer representation as recurring themes, as he hopes to spread the joy of each community he is a part of.

Unison Festival 2026

The Unison Festival is a national celebration of 2SLGBTQIA+ choirs from across Canada, taking place from May 18-21, 2026, in Vancouver, BC. This festival brings together choirs for a weekend filled with music, community, and connection. It offers a unique opportunity for choruses to share their love of singing, learn from one another, and celebrate diversity and inclusion.

The theme for the 2026 festival is “Music Healing Spirit,” emphasizing the transformative power of music to heal, uplift, and unite communities. In times of challenge, music inspires hope and offers solace, serving as a testament to our enduring strength.

We are excited to announce that the host chorus for this year's festival will be the Vancouver Men's Chorus. Their dedication to musical excellence and community engagement will be an integral part of this event.

During the festival, attendees can expect a rich program of choral performances showcasing a wide range of styles and voices, alongside workshops led by experts on topics such as vocal technique, choir leadership, and community building through music. Social events will foster connections among participants, celebrating the joy of singing together.

Whether you’re a performer or an audience member, the Unison Festival promises to be a weekend filled with inspiring music, personal connections, and a shared sense of purpose.
